"What will my child learn?"
Great question! My question for you is:
"What does your child WANT to learn?"
KarsenArt Art Classes offer a unique perspective on how a child learns through hands-on experiences. If there is no “right” and “wrong” way when it comes to creating art, then why should an art class be structured to teach “right” vs “wrong” ways to create?
One of the main things I love about art is the creativity behind any and all artwork done by all artists. Kids are smart and so creative; being able to bring their imagination to life is the coolest thing to watch. Any and all ideas are welcome in the studio; no matter how crazy the idea, we try our best to make it work! In my art lessons, I stay away from traditional teaching methods, and instead of a teacher-led class, I have a child-led class. I am Montessori certified and follow the Montessori Method in all areas I teach. This means I follow what the artist wants to learn. If the child shows interest in a topic, then that is where I will show my art techniques that work best for me. I believe a good piece of art is something the artist worked hard on and is proud of. Not if their technique was "done correctly." Some of history's most well-known artists strayed away from what art was "supposed" to look like. This is art to me. Anyone can be an artist. And my job as their art teacher is to encourage that passion and drive.
If you’re looking for art lessons that are structured down to a correction of every little wrong mark made. My art lessons are not the place. Not only is the Montessori method child-driven, but it is also all about trusting the passions and interests of the child. Art is just such a wide range of techniques. Art cannot be done wrong. And I can’t stress that enough. Even a young 5-year-old artist has the ability to create a good piece of art. Within boundaries, I give all creativity to the artist. Offering ideas and choices, and when asked, I give them techniques that have worked for me (they don’t work for everyone), and I just encourage that confidence in them.

My artists are constantly reminded that:
"There is no such thing as a bad piece of art!"
As one of my lessons said, "Ms. Karsen has everything!" Which is true! I have filled my studio with as many art supplies as you can think of! (and still filling it up!) I love working on my own art while they work on theirs; we're just two artists bouncing ideas and suggestions off of each other. Anytime a piece is finished, we ask the other, "Is this your best work?" "Do you like it?" and "What is your favorite part?" The main thing I "teach" in art lessons is to be proud of YOUR work; a good piece of art is something you're proud of and did your best working on!
Many hard questions and obstacles come with trying new things; even in art, we face challenges. Nobody is perfect, but with confidence and support, I think we can do just about anything. I love my job, and I love art and passionate people, and art lessons just fill me with joy. Art lessons are my favorite part of the week, and I can't wait to meet your artist!
